What Will You Experience?

Moana Institute Maui is a division of Maui Preparatory Academy an amazing destination for motivated students to learn and play in a nurturing yet academically rigorous college-preparatory environment. Maui Prep is located on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Maui. The volcanic origins of the Hawaiian archipelago, the tropical climate, and the warm Pacific Ocean that teems with marine life make the “outdoors” Maui Prep’s most extraordinary classroom. No matter the student’s interests – in the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, or the arts, the foundation of Maui Prep’s program is its commitment to coaching 21st-century higher order thinking skills, collaboration, communication, and innovation, and to providing multi-disciplinary college preparatory learning opportunities.

College Prep Academics

Working in partnership with your sending school, you will engage in a wide variety of academic courses and experiences covering all core academic areas. The Moana Institute provides a respected academic program that is well recieved by both domestic and international post-secondary institutions.

Semester On Island students will engage in the active research of local scientists. Whether is it aiding in the identification of the local manta ray population or logging the behavior of humpback whales, this is not your typical “lab-in-a-can” science experience.

Hands On, Feet Wet

You will live our maxim that “Maui Is Our Classroom”. Put that textbook away, step out of the traditional, four-walled classroom and engage in a redefinition of education: a literally immersive, relevant, and impactful learning experience.

Adventure With ‘Ohana

Maui is a truly special place on Earth. There is no better way to explore everything Maui has to offer then with your new ‘ohana. Moana Institute’s Summer On Island program caters to high school students world wide providing a rich, cultural experience for all.

One Semester, One Huge Classroom

Students will experience significant individualized attention in a nurturing and supportive environment with an 8:1 student to teacher ratio. Courses in English, History, Mathematics, The Sciences, Studio Art, and Art History. Unparalleled outdoor learning experiences in the naturally diverse setting of Maui from atop the 3,000-meter dormant volcano Haleakala down to the coral reefs of Honolua Bay.

Semester On Island

At the Moana Institute, we don’t believe that a classroom should have four walls. Our ideal classroom has no walls! As a Moana Institute student, you will have the opportunity to literally make Maui your classroom. Whether it is learning to SCUBA dive near Kaanapali or discussing Moby Dick in a literature circle one morning on DT Fleming beach, you are guaranteed to come away with a new definition of “school.”

We are now accepting applicants for the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters.

Hale Maui – Dormitory

During your stay, you will reside at Hale Maui, our residential facility. Hale Maui is just steps away from the ocean. You and your roommates will live in one of several, spacious dorm apartments. As a community, we gather in “The Nest”, Hale Maui’s penthouse, to share meals, engage with guest lecturers, and have community gatherings. Our residential faculty provide a safe, caring, and supportive environment allowing you to have the most memorable time possible on Maui.

Coral Reef Ecology

The coral reef serves as a community for a host of different organisms, many found only in Hawaiian waters. The reef can be thought of like a city; every inhabitant has its role to play.

Research Methodology

We don’t just learn science, we do science. Moana Institute students partner to world leading scientists and participate in meaningful and impactful research projects. Manta rays, humpback whales and coral reefs await.

Marine Mammology

Every winter and spring, Maui’s waters play home to the majestic humpback whale. There is no greater place in the world to observe these gentle giants.

There is no better place to gain a thorough understanding of the concept of sustainability than on the most isolated island chain in the world. The lessons learned and initiatives embarked upon while on Maui will have a long-lasting impact on the lives of our students.

Watershed Systems

From the mountain to the sea (ahupua’a), everything is connected.  What happens in the rainforest, on the ridge, or in our backyard has a direct impact on the ocean.

Building on the principle of “interconnectedness”, Moana Institute students engage with the physical and chemical aspects of our oceans. Distant storms, ocean currents and sea bottom geography all play a role in determining the next big surf swell.
